IN A MORE CONTEMPORARY CONTEXT, we see this belief with athletes who had dreams, like LeBron James, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, or Michael Phelps. We see it with actors and actresses who, upon winning an Academy Award, say, “Ever since I was little, I dreamed of this moment.” We see it with entrepreneurs who say, “I had the vision that this product or service would one day become a reality.” We see it with many people who dream big and go far.

In one of his Nike ads, Michael Jordan made an incredibly powerful and insightful statement that epitomizes the transcendent power of intention. This intention carried him through the many days of hard workouts and heartbreaking playoff losses that were part of his journey to six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls. Jordan said:

“I have something more important than courage—I have patience. I will become what I know that I AM.”

When your belief reaches this pinnacle level and you combine it with an unwavering faith in the completion of your desire, time is no longer a factor. You are not focused on the question “When?” but rather on the more creative, faith-filled path of “How?” When you are so involved in the “how,” your dream seemingly becomes real in no time. There is no resistance to the process or the possibilities because you are only focused on what is possible, rather than on what is not possible.

This reminds me of a story related to how fast the universe responds to the truth you hold about any situation you face. It is an example of the remarkable power we have in relation to the creation or collapse of time and circumstance. Although this example may seem minute, the implications for change in your life based on a new mind-set are enormous.

IN 2006, my family and I were on a winter trip with three other families that are very good friends of ours. After a long and tiring, but very fun, day spent skiing and sledding, everyone was hungry for a big dinner. We decided to order out. One of the other fathers and I drove about fifteen minutes into town to pick up the food. When we came out of the store and got in the car to go home, we saw that the road was completely congested with traffic as far as the eye could see. The road, a two-lane highway, was entirely backed up in both directions. It appeared that we were going to be delayed for a long time. My friend instantly became agitated and his whole demeanor changed. There was so much traffic backed up that he didn’t even think we’d be able to get out of the parking lot. Immediately the negative statements started coming out of his mouth. “Oh, this is great; we will never get home,” “It’s going to be hours,” and “Dinner will be ruined!”

Upon hearing this, I took the opportunity to present a new way he might want to consider dealing with the situation.
